  About arrangement
From: biffyshrew@aol.com (Biffyshrew)
I don't think you could call it a 1984 arrangement--the _Them Or Us_ track is a real mish-mosh of overdubs from different years. The basic track must have been recorded late 1974/early 1975 along with the rest of the "Hunchentoot" material (i.e., that which ended up on _Sleep Dirt_), but all that's left of that original track is George Duke's piano. Duke last worked with Zappa in Octobe r 1975. Patrick O'Hearn didn't link up with Zappa until almost a year later. But note that the mysterious pairing of Duke and O'Hearn also occurs on "Flambay" and "Spider Of Destiny," both "Hunchentoot" tracks. My guess is that Birdleg s Youmans played bass on the originals (as he did on "Time Is Money," also a "Hunchentoot" song), but FZ had O'Hearn replace the bass parts later. The Bo b and Thana Harris vocals and the Wackermanized drums undoubtedly were added in the early '80s at the same time they were overdubbing the _Sleep Dirt_ tracks; Ray and Ike may have been added at the same time or even a little later.

And also recording You Are What You Is too, probably. It's difficult to pinpoint when that stuff was recorded, because it includes David Logeman which would hint at after the summer 80 tour, but also has Ed Mann who didn't play live again until autumn '81.
Check the vocal sound - does it sound like YAWYI or more like the big, echoy Thing Fish vocals?
