Here is the full story as was told by FZ to Tom Mulhern in 1983 Re-typed for your pleasure from A Definitive Tribute to Frank Zappa p.36
TM: Last year you were doing the Allman Brothers' "Whipping Post" [At Fillmore East, Capricorn]. Why?
FZ: It started about ten or twelve years ago when some guy in the audience at a concert in Helsinki, Finland, requested it.
  TM: In English?
FZ: Yes. He just yelled out "Whipping Post" in broken English. I have it on tape. [VS note: See YCDTOSA II. Montana] And I said, "Excuse me?" I could just barely make it out. We didn't know it, and I felt kind of bad that we couldn't just play it and blow the guy's socks off. So when [pianist/vocalist/saxophonist] Bobby Martin joined the band, and I found out that he knew how to sing that song, I said, "We're definitely going to be prepared for the next time somebody wants 'Whipping Post' - in fact we're going to play it before somebody even asks for it." I've got probably 30 different versions of it on tape from concerts all around the world, and one of them ig going to be the "Whipping Post" - the apes "Whipping Post" of the century.
TM: Maybe they mistook you for Duane Allman
FZ: Oh sure they did. People do all the time.
